House concert FAQ

The below information is for people new to hosting house concerts. If you already run a listening room or house concert series you can simply email us at info@joshkaufmanmusic.com to talk about details. We know that there is no one way to run a show, so we’re happy to work with you if you are interested.

What is a House Concert?

House concerts are… concerts in your house… or barn, or backyard, or any other location that you have access to that can hold from 25 - 100+ people. The main focus is for everyone in attendance to be able to sit in the same space for the entirety of the show. The music should be the primary reason for the gathering just as it would be when going to a concert at any other venue. In other words, this is not a private event (wedding, party, etc.) with entertainment as a bonus. The concert is the thing. However, if entertainment for a private event is what you’re looking for, we can make that happen, too.

How long is the show?

Generally 1 1/2 hours long, but can be shorter or longer depending on the event and setup.

Who will come to the show?

Generally your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, etc.. If you’re feeling generous and want to open your home/location to other fans of Josh we have ways to make that happen too.

Where will people sit?

If you don’t have 25+ chairs, I mean who does, you can borrow from friends, have guests bring chairs, or have people sit on the ground. Be creative!

How does the money thing work?

We can do online tickets through this website, or the host can simply collect a “suggested donation” from the attendees the day of the show. We typically suggest $20 per person. If people want to pay more for the experience great, if they can’t afford this then they are welcome to pay less, as we don’t want to turn anyone away based on $.

It works best when there is a minimum financial guarantee that we work out with the host ahead of time. This helps Josh to cover travel, lodging (if needed), etc. and to make it financially viable to do these shows. This also helps the host to not feel bad about attendance if something comes up, and there are fewer people than expected.

100% of the money goes directly to Josh so attendees can feel good about directly supporting an independent musician. Also, Josh really enjoys doing concerts in this sort of setting, so he is willing to do them at a lower rate than a typical private event. Please understand that music for private events will be priced differently.

How do I share the show with my network?

Email, social media, text messages, word of mouth, etc. We’ll help you out in how to best promote the event.
